For many years I thought of forming a community Concert Band. Knowing there are 14 high schools in Toowoomba, all with a vibrant instrumental music programme, then on average 70 musicians each year leave school after 8 years of "banding". Along with the many adults who may wish to rekindle their dormant love of performing, then there was a large resource ready to be tapped.
With wonderful support from Merryl Miller of the Toowoomba Chronicle, Chris Jensen of local ABC radio and John Coman, principal of St Mary's college, a public meeting was held on 29th November 2004 to gauge interest in forming a band. The following Monday, 6th December 2004, the first rehearsal of the Toowoomba Concert Band was conducted with 28 musicians attending.
Our first public performance was given at Picnic Point on Sunday 20th March 2005 and our inaugural formal concert was presented in the T.P. O'Brien Centre St Mary's college on Monday 25th April 2005. Each year the band presents 3 formal concerts, supports Anzac Day services, provides musical support for church services, performs at the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers, 2 Christmas performances and retirement villages.
Our uniform is black and white adorned with red, yellow, dark blue, bottle green and purple tie or scarf. These colours represent the floral traditions for which Toowoomba is well renown. Our flower insignia is the Toowoomba violet, a plant endemic to this area.
Thank you for visiting our website. Whenever you are visiting Toowoomba, a warm welcome will be extended should you wish to join us in rehearsal. I wish you well with your musical endeavours.
Warm regards,
Mac
